A open chain exercise refers to any exercise in which the force applied by the body is great enough to overcome the resistance. An example of an open chain exercise would be a bench press, or any leg press which allows the force applied to move the load away from the body. [1] Also sometimes referred to as open kinetic chain exercise, they can otherwise be described as any exercise where the hand or foot is able to move freely, such as in the case of the bicep curl or the bench press. [2]
