Glycine is a nonessential amino acid. [1] Glycine is essential for a healthy, normally functioning digestive system. It helps regulate the synthesis of the bile acid used to digest fats. It is also an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system, especially in the spinal cord, brainstem, and retina. [2]
